What is a Successful Morning?

Forget the idea of morning or evening people, those are stupid ideas. You can be whatever kind of person you want to be. You can be a morning and an evening person if you want. Who’s telling you you can’t? Make every part of every day your time to shine. Personally, I feel my best when I have productive days, but those days usually only come around when I have a successful morning.

A successful morning is a subjective idea. What’s successful for me may not be successful for you, but there are a few basic concepts everyone can use to make the most of their mornings:

  • Get some sleep

A lot of the entrepreneurs (or aspiring ones) I’ve met are night owls. That’s great, darkness can be really good for working with it’s peaceful, thought-provoking qualities, but you shouldn’t let it mess up your sleep schedule. Most people operate on that 9 to 5 grind, and you’re going to need to respect that, especially while building your career. Plan to get to bed at a time where you can get the hours of sleep you need. You might hate it for a bit, but soon enough it’ll be a habit that makes your life a lot easier.

  • Accomplish something as soon as you wake up

You’ve probably heard this one before, but that’s because it works. When you wake up, you want to take every opportunity to set the tone for your day. The first thing I do when I wake up is make my bed. Maybe you do the same thing. This simple act of throwing my comforter back over my sheets and putting a few decorative pillows on the headboard is my first accomplishment of the day. When you start your day with something productive, no matter how small it is, you are telling yourself that that day is a day for work.

  • Schedule stuff early

Learning how to make mornings, afternoons, and evenings productive is difficult. Sometimes, the best way to make something happen is to force it to happen. When I found myself sleeping in to 11am or 12pm, I saw the quality of my work and my motivation decrease. I started scheduling my meetings, doctors appointments, and workouts as early as I could stand. By putting something important at the beginning of your day, you’re forcing yourself to get out of bed. You’d be surprised what an extra 3 or 4 hours of time can do for your productivity.

  • Treat your body well

This one is a no-brainer. Eat your fruits and veggies, move your body, drink lots of water, and don’t let stress bother you too much. Your mind does it’s best work when your body is taken care of.

  • Give yourself something to be excited about

This tip is like a bonus tip, but I do find that it really helps. I love breakfast, so I motivate myself to get out of bed and do what I need to do quickly so I can go and eat the awesome breakfast I have planned for myself. Give yourself rewards to look forward to, but make sure you define what has to get done before those rewards can be received.

You can be whatever you want to be – morning person, night owl, whatever. None of your good habits have to be defined by anything inherent. You can curate a reality that bends to your will, not the other way around. You can call it what you like – tricking your brain, adjusting your lifestyle, etc. but just make it work. If you want to be a morning person, figure out how to become one. Try everyone’s tips until something works. These work for me, give them a shot and see if you find the same results.
